Singapore’s education system is really stressful and extremely demanding. It basically revolves around marks. Can you imagine? If you take a step back and look at the lives of Singaporeans in this era, most of our futures are determined by a few numbers on a piece of paper. It does sound stupid doesn’t it? Singapore’s Education Minister has come out openly to say that a lack of drive in Singaporean students is worrying and I must admit, he isn’t completely wrong. Students these days do want to be spoon fed, want everything served on a silver platter and they ought to be despised. But look at it this way, it isn’t entirely their fault for having that mentality. It is daunting to be constantly motivated in Singapore whether or not you’re a student because just like what they always say here, if you don’t put in enough effort, you’ll ‘lose out’.
Everyone in Singapore right now is fighting for a place in top universities and stuff. It’s no wonder that here in Singapore, happiness and success have become so tightly intertwined. I’m not saying that it’s wrong or we’re the only country doing this, but I can’t help but feel that Singapore should slow down a little and not try so hard to be the best of the best in terms of education. I know I’m in no position to say this, but it’s just my two cents worth as a student struggling to compete with all the other students here. Of course, there are also plus points in the method Singapore is taking to make students ace in terms of education.
